New Delhi: The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has officially launched a new Aadhaar mobile application, marking a major upgrade in how Indian residents access and manage their digital identity. Rolled out nationwide in late January 2026, the new app is designed to offer stronger privacy, better security, and greater user control compared to the older mAadhaar platform.
The launch aligns with the government’s broader push toward secure digital public infrastructure, enabling citizens to verify their identity, share Aadhaar details selectively, and update key information directly from their smartphones.
What Is the New Aadhaar App?
The new Aadhaar app is a comprehensive digital identity management platform developed by UIDAI. Unlike earlier versions, it goes beyond simply displaying Aadhaar details and introduces offline verification, consent-based data sharing, biometric control, and easier updates.
The app is available for both Android and iOS users and is gradually set to replace the older mAadhaar application.
Key Features of the New Aadhaar App
1. Selective Data Sharing for Privacy
Users can now share only the required Aadhaar information, such as name or age, instead of revealing their full Aadhaar number. This consent-based approach significantly reduces the risk of misuse and data exposure.
2. Secure QR Code-Based Verification
The app allows users to generate encrypted QR codes for Aadhaar verification. This feature works offline, meaning Aadhaar can be verified without an internet connection or physical card.
3. Biometric Lock and Unlock
Users can instantly lock or unlock their biometric data, including fingerprints and iris scans. When biometrics are locked, Aadhaar authentication cannot be performed, adding an extra layer of security against fraud.
4. Face Authentication and App Security
The app supports face authentication and PIN-based login, ensuring only the Aadhaar holder can access sensitive services within the app.
5. Aadhaar Update Services
For the first time, users can update their registered mobile number and address directly through the app, reducing the need to visit Aadhaar enrolment centres for basic changes.
6. Multi-Profile Support
One device can securely manage up to five Aadhaar profiles, making it convenient for families to handle Aadhaar details from a single smartphone linked to the same mobile number.
7. Aadhaar Usage History
Users can view authentication history, allowing them to track when and where their Aadhaar was used. This improves transparency and helps detect unauthorised activity.
8. Multilingual Interface
To ensure wider accessibility, the app supports multiple Indian languages, making it user-friendly across regions.
What Users Can Do With the New Aadhaar App
- Verify identity digitally at hotels, offices, airports, and service centres
- Share Aadhaar details securely for KYC without photocopies
- Lock and unlock biometric data anytime
- Download and store e-Aadhaar securely on the phone
- Update mobile number and address online
- Manage Aadhaar details for family members
- Monitor Aadhaar authentication activity
Availability and Setup
The new Aadhaar app can be downloaded from official app stores. Users need:
- Their 12-digit Aadhaar number
- A registered mobile number for OTP verification
- Optional face authentication or PIN for added security
Once verified, the app is ready for use within minutes.
Why This App Matters
The new Aadhaar app reflects a shift toward “minimum data sharing, maximum privacy.” It supports India’s digital governance goals while complying with modern data protection standards. By enabling offline verification and user-controlled data sharing, the app reduces dependence on physical documents and lowers the risk of identity theft.
What’s Next
UIDAI is expected to roll out additional update options, such as name and email changes, in future app updates. As adoption grows, the new Aadhaar app is likely to become the primary method for Aadhaar verification and management in everyday life.
